We all have wishes. Those things/situations that would make life better, easier, and an outright joy worth living. In my life I have seen many wishes granted but sometimes it went unnoticed. How is that possible? Well, some of our wishes are answered through struggle or they were answers in a way we were not expecting. I love the quote from the comedy movie “Evan Almighty: where God (played by Morgan Freeman) says, “Let me ask you something. If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?"
So I will show you just two examples of the many wishes come true that I have witnessed myself and in future blogs will reveal more:
(1) While I was married, my husband always told me his dreams of being his own boss, making his own schedule, working from home, doing something that will really help people, and maintain a healthy life style. But when we got out of college he worked in an IT Dept behind a desk for 14 years. It did not seem like he would ever get his dream job. Then one awful day the entire building at the airport shut down. Just like that 300 people lost their jobs! For months he was looking for a job and getting very depressed. One day there was an ad for a Health Club as a Personal Trainer starting at Minimum Wage with the opportunity to make more. He decided to go for it and got it, despite the critics who told him, “You will never make money as a Personal Trainer!”, “That’s good for now but soon you will need a REAL job!”, “There is no money in this economy to pay good money for a Personal Trainer. You are wasting your time!” etc. No less than a year after he lost his IT job, in his new job he was back to the same salary as his old job and now he was working his own schedule, helping people be healthy, was his own boss, and sometimes worked from home. He never thought in a million years that by losing his job it was actually the universe putting him in the path of getting his dream job!
(2) Growing up, my sister always wanted to be in International Business, be on TV, and maybe write a book. So she decided to work for a very prestigious bank in London as an Finance Associate with very high end wealthy international clients. She thought this would make her happy. She was pulling in six figures and living in one of the top international cities in the world. And…she was absolutely miserable. Working long arduous hours, locked away in an office hardly seeing the light of day, eating a diet of Hobnobs and Red Bull, I mean.... who wouldn't be miserable? It was a prison! She then did the unbelievable and left that dreary depressing job to work in a Wine Store in Downtown Manhattan but for literally ¼ of her previous salary. Many thought she lost her mind but her passion was wine. She was fascinated by the flavors and all the science behind it. From there she heard about the Master of Wine Certificate. Although it took investment of time, money, classes, certification, she is now living her dream job! She is the 4th Woman in America to ever hold the title Master of Wine, travels all over the world to judge wine competitions, appears on Major TV Channels, created six DVDs and published two books. Certainly if I were to tell that tired, depressed, stressed young lady years earlier that she was going to live her dreams a few years from now she never would have believed me. It took amazing courage to leave the misery of those “golden handcuffs” (as she likes to call them), to follow her real passion. No, it was not easy. But she was persistent and now is living her dream job.
In both of these stories, if they were both rigid in their thinking, they never would have fulfilled their dreams. Yes, it did come through some misery, but it was that misery that became a stepping stone for them to go to higher ground!
