So why do bad things happen to good people? This is a complex topic and in the first article (click here to see) I explain that it is NOT because we are “bad” but rather the Universe is trying to teach us some very important lessons. Another reason could be that the Universe needs to steer us to where we need to be for our highest good and intent. I’ll explain further so stay with me here…
Regardless of your background, most have heard of the story of Moses how he confronted Pharaoh, placed The Plagues on the Egyptian People, and Pharaoh released the Jewish people. As the Jews went out into the desert they thought that they were free to go onward to their Promise Land. The story should have ended their, right? Nope! It says in Exodus (9:12) that “And God hardened Pharaoh’s heart” , meaning that he changed his mind and decided to get his slaves back and sent his army to chase them. Now, this confused me … “Wait... What?? Why would GOD harden Pharaoh’s heart? Wasn’t it God who wanted the Jewish people to be free in the first place? Why would God intentionally make it a harder for them to escape?”
I know in my life I have experienced something similar. Well… not The Plagues or parting of the Red Sea or anything but the sudden hardening of someone’s heart that I could just not understand. Or put another way, doors were slammed in my face and nothing I said or did would allow that door to open again. No matter how much I begged, prayed, and pleaded with the Universe - the closed door would not open. At first I had thought that it must be some sort of mistake. It did not make any sense. Then Exodus 9:12 came to my mind and I realized that if the door is shut, then it must be God’s Will that it remain shut. But how can that be when that would make me so miserable?
The answer is simple but not easy. The Universe (or God, whichever you prefer) saw a better future for me and knew I would not close that door myself, so He had to close it for me. People hearts change and doors slam in our face that won’t open again and it is something that just needs accepting. If you have tried everything to keep that door open but it remains shut, then it was not meant to be open. These blockages are meant to force us to choose a different path or direction to go in, one that will be better for us.
Put another way... I imagine it’s like an experiment with a rat in a maze. The scientist will close off certain routes to prevent the rat from going off course so it can get to the cheese quicker. But what if the rat was stubborn and stayed at the closed-off route hoping it would open again? Then it would never get to the cheese of course. Same with our situations…. If we refuse to accept a door has closed, we waste valuable time that could be used to get to the better (and open) door much faster.
So next time you find yourself in a situation where someone’s heart is suddenly hardened that is preventing you from your Promise Land or a door is slammed in your face, do not assume you are being punished or you are a Bad Person or that the awesome future you planned is over. It may just be the Universe’s (or God’s) way of saying to you “There is a better future for you, but you can’t get there that way. There is another path to a better future. The faster you accept that, the faster you'll get there.”
